There have been a lot of comments on social media about the current situation that Channel View Medical Group is experiencing with regards to our premises and the news that the Teignmouth Health & Wellbeing Centre is to be stood down.

In 2020, Channel View agreed to take over the contract for Teignmouth Medical Practice as the Partners there were near retirement.  We did this to protect continuity of care for the local population.  This decision was taken on the understanding that we would be able to move into the new Health & Wellbeing Centre.  The lease on The Den building is due to expire in March 2025 and both our sites in Teignmouth are cramped, out-dated and not designed for delivering health care.  We do not have adequate space, which impacts on our ability to recruit, retain and expand our team.

We would not normally comment on posts on Facebook, but there have been numerous comments as to why we do not simply relocate to Teignmouth Hospital when our lease expires, as it is claimed to be a solution to our problems at a fraction of the cost. We do not believe the hospital site is currently a viable option for a number of reasons, but primarily due to the estimated cost of turning the hospital into a facility for general practice and other services.

In autumn 2023, as part of its ongoing work with the Teignmouth Hospital Stakeholder Group, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust commissioned Ward Williams Associates to complete a high-level feasibility assessment to repurpose and refurbish the Teignmouth Community Hospital site as a health and wellbeing centre. The total estimated cost was £23.3 million, which exceeds the estimated cost of the health and wellbeing centre in Brunswick Street. You can read the feasibility assessment by clicking on the link below – scroll to the page marked 173.

We want to thank all our patients for their support and while we are extremely disappointed by the decision that has been taken, we’re working closely with NHS Devon on accommodation solutions and will share more details as soon as we can.
